Howdy!
Here are a few things to anticipate.
New Year’s eve. Everyone is invited for a Potluck at the Neubauers.
January 2, Jeff Carr and Julian Davila are planning to meet at the building at noon to pass some info. out in the neighborhood.
January 10, Darrell Hymel will be coming to give a report on the missionary work he is doing in China. We give financial support to Darrell.
The last Sunday in August, Joe Fitch will be preaching.
The last Sunday in October, Larry Bilbo (Sinton), will be preaching.
From Amanda Drum…
I received the results of my most recent CAT scan. It showed slight improvement. As it has been almost 18 months since they first discovered the spots on my spleen and I have not shown any other signs of concern for cancer or sarcoid, the doctor has decided to leave me alone for a bit. I will not have to have another CAT scan for a year (and then just precautionary).
I appreciate all the prayers and believe they are what have seen me through this. You can remove me from the prayer list for now. Thanks so much!

Anointing Jesus
Matthew 26:6-13, records the story of a woman who took a very costly aromatic ointment and applied it to Jesus head. The disciples complained that the ointment could have been sold and the money used to help the poor. Jesus defended the woman’s action and stated that her action would be spoken of “in the whole world” and it would be a “memorial” of her.
There are several things that can be learned from these verses. The first is that sometimes you will be criticized when you do good. The disciples criticized the woman… not for doing bad but because they thought she could have done something better than what she did. At least one disciple, Judas, had an ulterior motive for criticizing her action… greed. He was the treasurer for the disciples (John 12).
One also has to wonder why the disciples called her out publically. Were they intentionally trying to embarrass her or were they just thoughtless? It doesn’t really matter, the effect on her would be the same.
The second thing we can learn from these verses is that sometimes we have to stand up for those who are being unfairly criticized. That’s what Jesus did. He commended her action and said she would be known and appreciated worldwide for it.
Really, Jesus had to defend her. Criticism has a crippling effect on people and fosters inactivity. He also had to defend her because once that criticism thing gets going it’s hard to stop. The last thing the early church needed was Apostles who criticized people for doing good. Jesus wanted his leadership to build people up not… tear them down.
The woman could have given the nointment away to help the poor, after all when we help the poor it is the same as helping Jesus (Matt. 25:40), but she wanted to do something very personal for Jesus... and that's OK.
I can imagine the woman wilting under the public criticism but when Jesus spoke up for her I’ll bet her face was beaming with joy.
Let’s continue to do good and also protect those who need it.

Howdy! Here are a few notes of interest
From Arlie…
I just got word my Mom in Kansas City taken to emergency room and being admitted with blood clot in one leg, UTI Infection, and not breathing well. So I leave tomorrow, should return on the lst of Jan. if all is well. Please let whoever does announcements tomorrow night know this. Thanks. Pray for all of us. My sis and bro. will be there too.
From Virginia concerning her son, David…
Happy news from the Lawler family! David's CAT scan showed no sign of cancer.
Thanks for the many prayers. Virginia
Sad news from Judy Shelton concerning her brother…
My brother died this morning around 11:45AM.
Judy Shelton
The Neubauers are having a get together at their home on New Years Eve. There are invitations at the building. Coincidentally, we’ll use this as a going away party for them… how convenient. I guess we can take Elizabeth off of the prayer list for her recent Gall bladder surgery.

Who is Religious and Who is Not?
Who is religious and who is not?
“If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:26.
This passage is very revealing to those who want to be acceptable to God. One characteristic of Christians is that they control their speech. One way to control our speech is to limit our interaction with others or to totally seclude ourselves… that is not what God wants. He wants his people to interact with others. That’s obvious because the next section of this passage says that Christians are supposed to…
“look after orphans and widows in their distress”.
So Christians are people of action and in their action they need to control their speech. Why is God interested in orphans and widows? By definition orphans and widows are missing something; Orphans are missing their parents and widows are missing their husbands. As such they are missing the emotional well being that comes from those relationships and they also may be in financial distress.
When I was at Darell Robert’s funeral a man came up to me and stated that when he was a kid his father abandoned their family. He said that Darell and Mackie took an interest in him and his siblings. That meant the world to him. He also told me that other kids would make fun of them saying things like, “your dad left because of you”. He encouraged me to be on the look out for kids in a similar predicament.
When dad died and mother was widowed I learned a lot of things. One thing she told me was that she was no longer the most important person in anyone’s life. Think about that. You go from being a person who you have a rich history with, who you’ve shared everything with to being… alone.
So what do you do for a widow? Let me suggest that a little attention goes a long way; remembering birthdays, anniversaries, thoughtful gifts, sharing a meal, even a hug.
That’s not going to replace a husband but it helps and the real person it helps is you and I.

Good Things About Alzheimer's... (reprint)
Good Things about Alzheimer’s...
By Rob Perkins
Alzheimer’s is a horrible and dreadful disease. Julie’s dad has it and it has stripped him of his memory and left him a shell of his former self. He has a hard time recognizing those who he has loved the most in the world and after a lifetime of being the “rock” in the family... he cannot care for himself and is wholly dependent on others to survive. The pathetic thing about Alzheimer’s is that it doesn’t kill you very quickly. Your body can continue surviving long after your brain is gone.
Another pathetic thing about Alzheimer’s is that some families will not sign “do not resuscitate” orders so that some of these totally incapacitated folks are surviving, in name only, with stomach tubes and IV catheters in place. Trying to keep a body alive that wanted to die a long time ago.
So what’s good about Alzheimer’s? Seeing the love and compassion that is displayed by family members caring for their loved ones. That is a wonderful thing.
When Julie’s dad was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s she drove to Houston every week to help her mother care for her dad. That went on for several months. Now that he is somewhat stabilized and the family has adjusted to his situation she is able to go once a month.
Last Sunday we went to go visit her dad and I was able to observe a part of her life that I had not known previously. She has come to know on a first name basis many of the patients there... and she helps and cares for them.
When we went down the hall to see her dad a woman in a wheel chair was screaming for help. Julie called her by name and asked her what was the matter and helped her... even though it interrupted the time she was spending with her dad. Countless times she pointed out people to me and told me their names and what was the matter with them. She also told me some of the people were missing... obviously passed from their earthly existence since the last time she was there.
Those folks are very aware of when dinner time is and if they are able, they start slowly moving in the direction of the dining hall. Julie was pushing her dad in his wheel chair and an old incapacitated man was wedged with his wheel chair in a corner. Julie said, “Rob you push Daddy...I’ll help him”. When we got in the dining hall there were about 10 people already there and she started helping them put their bibs on. Those who were able smiled and thanked her.
Julie pointed out to me a cupholder that her brother Lonnie had attached to her dad’s wheelchair. As I looked around I saw that there were other wheel chairs with those same cupholders attached.
Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease and deservedly so, but the good thing about it is that it provides an opportunity for God’s people to shine and when God’s people are shining... God is glorified and... that’s good.

Prayer Request - Lori Carson
Please put my niece Lori Carson on the prayer list. She lives in Flower Mound, Texas, and is the single mother of 3 young children whom she is rearing in the church. She has been diagnosed with a stage 2 aggressive breast cancer, gone through a mastectomy, and started chemo last Thursday. Her attitude is great and she has a strong faith in the Lord. Please pray for her parents also. They are there everyday to help her with the children, and we parents can only imagine the agony they are going through as they see their daughter go through this.
Thanks so very much.

Adam and Eve
Ponder this question; Could we be completely happy in a relationship just with God?
Apparently not; Adam was in a one on one relationship with God. He walked and talked with him in the Garden of Eden. However, God knew that Adam needed something else.
Gen. 2:18, “Then the Lord God said, ‘it is not good for the man to be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him’.”
God could have made the woman right then, but he didn’t. He gave Adam the task of naming all the animals. An interesting thing happened, as Adam was naming all the animals he had to have noticed that for every He-animal there was a She-animal. He realized that there was no counter-part for him.
Gen. 2:20, “… but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him”.
God knew Adam needed someone but God wanted Adam to know it too.
God could have made the woman out of dust (like he did Adam) but instead God “caused a deep sleep to fall upon him… He took one of his ribs… and fashioned into a woman (from the rib).”
Here’s a lesson from God; you don’t get something for nothing. There was a price that Adam had to pay.
Adam must have been pretty excited about the woman because he said…
“This is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; She shall be called woman because she was taken out of man (he was still naming things). For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.”
Adam without his rib was incomplete. When his rib was returned to him in the form of a woman he was again complete (at a certain level). Of course as the relationship between a man and woman develops they are “one flesh” in a completely different way.
Julie and I have been married for 36 years. We had some disagreements in the early years of our marriage but as time has gone by we are of the same mind on so many things. Too often at the first sign of trouble young married couples are too ready to dissolve the relationship, but overcoming trials makes the relationship stronger and better. It builds trust.
When my dad died one of the things I remember my mom saying was that she was no longer “the most important person” in anyone’s life.
Marriage can be a great blessing if we’ll work God’s plan. God knows exactly what we need.

What to do About Anger
The book of Proverbs gives a lot of advice on how to live better lives. One of the recurring themes is being “slow to anger”. Anger leads to impulsive actions and a chain of events that can have permanent detrimental consequences. Consider the next five passages.
Proverbs 16:32,
“Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”
Proverbs 17:14,
The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so quit before the quarrel breaks out.
Proverbs 15:18,
“A hot tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.”
Proverbs 15:1,
“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Proverbs 16:23,
“The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to his lips.”
One of the biggest problems folks face today is anger and its consequences. Consequences include; unhappy homes, unhappy workplaces and breaking both the laws of man and of God. A person’s anger can land him in jail and in hell.
Sometimes we control our anger but it spills out on others. Have you ever found yourself to have internal anger that causes you to be an unpleasant person and spills out upon the innocent? Just controlling anger for the moment is not the answer.
The good news is that not only can we can train ourselves to control our anger, but we can also become the type of people who can defuse the anger of others. It’s all in God’s book… the Bible. What are we waiting on?

They have two daughters, one son and one grandchild. They both work for Carlisle Insurance where Bob is a producer and Hope is a CSR (Customer Service Rep.)
Bob Bickle Funeral Service
We had Bob Bickle’s funeral today. About 5 years ago some of the members of the Ayer’s street congregation approached us. The congregation was going to disband and they were looking for a place for their members to go. Bob was preaching there at the time. When David, Gus and I met with Bob we knew that Bob was the kind of guy that we would like to work with. His calm demeanor and wisdom came out during those meetings. We certainly had some differences but we all felt like we could work with each other for the greater goal of building the congregation and reaching out to the “lost”.
We decided to financially support Bob as he worked with the congregation here. It was probably one of the best decisions we ever made. Bob took us in a direction that without him we never would have gone; Prison work and Counseling.
Bob was very active in prison work. Every Tuesday he would drive to the prison unit in Beeville to teach an anger management class to the inmates there. Prison work is the kind of work that you don’t see immediate results with. It is an investment in the future. I was touched by what one of Bob’s co-workers said today, that two thousand prisoners had been praying for Bob while he was in the hospital.
Bob also was very active in counseling. We advertised “Free Christian Counseling” with Bob’s cell phone number on our message board at the building. Many took advantage of that. Bob was able to counsel folks about the problems they had because of sin in their lives. We have members at Parkway because of Bob’s counseling.
Bob was such a hard worker. He was always looking for ways to promote his free counseling service and he was always looking to increase his knowledge by going to counseling seminars. He maintained a counseling website. Pretty amazing for a man of his age and health to be so active.
When he was admitted into the hospital with his cardiac condition he was in a hurry to get out because he and Janet had planned a trip to go to Florida for a counseling seminar that he didn’t want to miss.
Bob and Janet were especially gifted at helping the older members and visiting the sick in the hospital. There is a lot more that could be said about Bob.
Bob will be missed by all. He made Parkway a better place.

Cowboy Church and Dogs in the Assembly
One of my employees has been attending a “Cowboy church”. If you’re not familiar with “Cowboy churches” they are basically a thematic Baptist church. The sermon usually is on a cowboy theme. People bring their horses and their dogs, etc. After services they have rodeo-like activities.
Anyway, when my employee mentioned she was taking her dog to services I commented that I thought that was inappropriate. I reasoned with her that some things could be right and proper but… inappropriate. As an example I cited Jesus’ righteous anger at finding money changers in the temple. Nothing wrong with the activity but it was in the wrong place. Jesus threw them out.
My employee accepted that and quit bringing her dog to church. She quit attending for awhile and has now gone back. Her daughters upon seeing all the dogs in the assembly asked if they could bring their dog next Sunday. She told them no because as she explained to me… she could tell the dogs were a distraction in the service.
I think that if Jesus were to visit a service with dogs in attendance he might with righteous anger cast them out. That seems obvious. What may not seem obvious is that Jesus would also be angry if we allowed anything to distract us from our service to him. He expects and deserves our full attention and service.

Here's a picture of Darell and mom at Walker's graduation back in May. Darell is a great man. He made mom happy and did a lot for our family. A side blessing has been getting to know Darell's four sons and their families. Unfortunately we haven't had the opportunity to meet Darrel's daughter Julie. Darell has fought cancer for awhile now and doesn't have much time left.
God bless you Darell... enjoy eternity.

Howdy!
Here’s the latest I have on Bob Bickle and I think we got this on Saturday from Gay…
“Hello. Janet just called and wanted to thank everyone for their love and support and that Bob is still very weak and unable to have visits but would appreciate cards. She is still not up for visits or phone calls now but does want everyone to know she appreciates everyone’s concern and prayers. She did say the therapist wanted Bob to sit in the chair a certain time frame and he could not do it… too weak. She said he has had a lot of trouble with his heart rhythm and it is just a very slow process now for his recovery. He is still in the cicu. thanks Gay”.
I was in Houston on Friday and Saturday. My step father, Darell Roberts, who has been in the hospital for 6 weeks has decided that he’s ready to go home to God. He is refusing any more treatment. I don’t expect that he’s going to live very long. Mom is a wreck. Please pray for them.
Julie got this note from Cyndi Garcia…
"Looks like I have a pretty bad tear in my (shoulder) tendon. It’s 75% torn with only a few fibers remaining intact. They made an appt for me for next week w/ a surgeon so we'll see if he agrees with the pcp that surgery is the only option. Right now, my shoulder is pretty useless and making simple everyday things very difficult.”
David Smitherman sent me this note about Darrell Hymel…
“Darrell called and wants to reschedule his trip here and come in Jan. instead of Dec. It’ll be Jan. 10. He has an opportunity to return to China to do some work and wants to take advantage of it. On this last trip he studied with a retired army general who had worked for and knew Chairman Mao.”
Kirby and Gabby Crabtree sent me this note…
“Hello my friend I hope all is well. I thought I would let you know that me and Gabby will be staying in Tennessee for a few months. Looking forward to returning to Parkway. Hope to see you soon. Your friend Kirby.”
Here’s a note from Trey and Marlena…
“Here's our new address. Use pencil in your address book though because it's going to change again when we move to NC in June!”

A big thanks to RD for doing the stenciling work necessary to make four more handicapped parking places.
Industrial Fabricators is making cages to go over our AC units. Hopefully this will prevent more theft.
Hubert and Anne Foster will be celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary this Wednesday.

Old Friends
Sometimes our past comes to visit us. You build your life and get used to it and live in it everyday, and get comfortable with it and then unexpectedly your other life pays you a visit.
That has happened to me at least three times that I can remember. The first time was when David Banning came for a gospel meeting. It wasn’t David who shook me up, it was his dad who came with him… Robert Banning. I nearly cried when I saw Robert. The Banning family has always been close to our family. Robert helped me get a job at Daniel Industries in Houston when I was in high school. My first car was a 1965 Pontiac Lemans. Robert worked on it for me. Robert served as a deacon with dad at Spring Woods. Later Robert was an elder at Kleinwood. I guess the last time I saw Robert was at my dad’s funeral.
The second time my past visited me was a few years ago when Kent Ellis walked in the church building unexpectedly… again overwhelming emotion. Kent preached and served as an elder with my dad at Spring Woods church of Christ. Kent along with Robert Harkrider preached at my dad’s funeral.
The third time was this past Wednesday night. Flo and Gerald Clanton visited. I didn’t even recognize them. I guess it’s been at least 30 years since I’ve seen them. Gerald was a deacon with dad at Spring Branch church of Christ. Later Gerald was an elder at Frey road in Houston. Their oldest son Brent was my good friend and dated Julie’s sister Becky. In fact, when the Bedwells moved to Houston they stayed for a month at a motel on the Katy freeway (I-10). Brent and I had the bright idea of sneaking out and riding our bicycles to go see Julie and Becky. After the visit as we were pulling out on our bicycles Brent’s parents and my parents pulled into the parking lot and caught us. Mom’s maternal instincts had caused her to wake up and check on us. Her instincts also caused her to wake the Clantons up and surmise where we might be.
I guess the common denominator in all this is a Christian heritage. Godly parents who were committed to Christ and his church. I guess I didn’t know at the time when I was growing up how important fellow Christians would be to me. I know now.

Howdy!
Bob Bickle continues to be in ICU at Spohn Shoreline. I got this message from Gay West today…
“Spencer, the Bickle’s grandson, called me and said the decision was made at the nine am meeting with the doc that they would wean Bob off that balloon pump which is helping him breath. The doc should be in around five today again, he will call me back with an update, he said he did eat a bit today and has the football games on. Janet is still very fragile and unable to take calls, etc.”
Bob and Janet’s daughter put this message up on Facebook…
“Bypass Surgery is not an option, he is too high risk. They are trying to wean him off the balloon and see if he stays stable then they will send him home. There isn't anything else they can do for him”.
We had a prayer service tonight on Bob’s behalf. Please continue to pray for him.
We had several old members visiting with us today including; Crystal Chester, Ryan Torres and Bill & Patty Chambers.
We had an out of town visitor today…
Adria D. Miles.
Adria is stationed here in Corpus and has had tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. She indicated on her visitor card that she is looking for a church home.
Don and Hope Moseley placed membership today. We’ll get their contact information out soon.
Maria Vasquez is scheduled for a c-section this week. Please pray.

John's Message
Mark 1:4 states that “John came and preached the baptism of repentance unto the remission of sins”.
John’s message was basically to identify how godly people should act… specifically which activities they should and should not engage in (Luke 3:10 -14).
The activities (sins) that they shouldn’t be engaging in had to be repented of and the guilty would have to be baptized in water to be made right with God.
In addition to teaching them how to live John prophesied that the Christ would come and baptize them in the Holy Spirit. So it was a message of preparing people in anticipation of the coming of the Christ and the blessings of the Holy Spirit.
The message being that if they failed to repent and be baptized they not only would miss out on the blessings of “the baptism in the Holy Spirit” and acceptance into the “kingdom of God” but also receive punishment in the form of “baptism in fire” and rejection.
That message was preached a long time ago but it really hasn’t changed. We need to take a close look at how we’re living and make the choice to reject sin and live godly lives so that we can receive the blessings he has promised and escape his wrath.

Howdy!
I just got off the phone with Janet Bickle (Monday 12:10 pm) and she said Bob’s defibrillator went off again this morning. The docs want to run more tests so he has to stay in the hospital until Weds. Spohn Shoreline room 614.
Remember the Hayride/Weenie roast at the Cargile’s La Garto Ranch this Saturday (Nov. 7).
The Ladies are having a Brunch at the Neubauer’s home December 5th from 9:30am to 12pm. Details to follow.
I talked with a visitor Sunday night from a local church of Christ. He said the reason he was visiting was because he ran across a few acquaintenances who said they attended at Parkway and loved it. So he decided to visit. Someone must be doing something right.

Singing with a Cancer
Julie and I were on vacation in Vermont last week. On Sunday we attended a church of Christ and when we walked in the door the first thing I noticed at the front of the building was a drum set, a piano and a keyboard. With the exception of these musical instruments they looked and acted like every other church of Christ I have been affiliated with; the same songbooks, the same lingo, everything.
There were only about 35 members present and when the song service started three of them operated the musical instruments. Those three didn’t sing at all… they just played the instruments.
I believe the Bible teaches that God wants singing alone during the assembly. One of the arguments of those who believe that musical instruments are acceptable to God is that the musical instruments only *assist* or *improve* the singing.
Not so in this little town in Vermont. The drums and piano dominated and overwhelmed the singing. You could barely hear the singers. The drummer at the end of each verse would add in a little extra “rat-a-tat-tat”.
In addition, the drummer and piano player got out of sync with each other.
It seemed to me that the singing phase of worship had a huge cancer growing on it that nobody could see.
It made me wonder a few things. If it’s OK to have musical instruments in the song worship, how many can you have? At this congregation 3 out of 35 members were playing instruments. Could half of the members play instruments and the other half sing? Where are the limits? Could you have a symphony?
Occasionally we have clients that bring in dogs that have volleyball sized cancers on them. Those cancers don’t start out big… they start out small. I’ve got a feeling that’s what happened at this church… they started out small… maybe just a piano (a small cancer) and then once everyone got used to that they just started adding more and more. The cancer kept growing.
You know sometimes our singing may not sound so great, but heart felt singing directed toward God is far, far sweeter than the clanging of musical instruments.

Howdy!
Dave Gilliam’s memorial service is scheduled for tomorrow (Monday) at 2 pm at the building. David Smitherman will be conducting the service.
Trey and Marlena Williams should be parents tomorrow. Marlena is scheduled for induction. Marlena’s mom and sister were visiting today. Trey’s parents were in as well.
Trey’s pilot training is almost over and they will be moving to Little Rock, Arkansas for more training on Oct. 24. We’ll miss them.
Update on Kevin Brown. Kevin is the young man who was in a car accident and wasn’t found for about 9 hours. His mother attends church in Sugarland. This is from his mom…
“Again, thank you all for your prayers and well-wishes for Kevin (and me). They got him off the ventilator yesterday and put him on an Oxygen thing that sealed over his face. They told us he was not out of the woods, though, and they might still have to trache him. Today they have moved him to a regular oxygen mask and let him sit in a chair for a while. He is still in la-la land and they still restrain him, but are trying to wean him off of the sedatives. He is still on antibiotics and is still in isolation in ICU, but any progress makes me happy. Portia said he is still agitated and is mad because he can’t understand where he is and why she won’t get him out. They have not let us know when they intend to perform the attitude adjustment.”
We had a guy at church Wednesday night who called and requested a study. Jeff and David studied with him before services and then he said he wanted to be baptized. First though, he wanted to talk to David in private. He informed David that he needed $150 for living expenses. He had a job and could repay on Friday. When Jeff and I met him after services I told him I wouldn’t loan him $150 without confirmation from his boss that he actually had a job. He asked that we put him up in a motel until that could be done the next day. We did that and gave him a ride to the motel.
Long story short… totally bogus. He called the next day purporting to be his “boss”. We caught him in it and he hung up on us.
Of course we want to help the truly needy and have compassionate hearts, but it can be challenging filtering out the con artists.
We tentatively have Darrel Hymell scheduled to come in and give us a report on his work in China on December 6. We are supporting him financially in this work. He is returning from China on November 10.
The Cargile’s annual weenie roast/hayride is scheduled for Nov. 10.

Tabby Sanchez
This is Tabby Sanchez. She was baptized by her grandfather, Jesse Guzman, yesterday.
She is the daughter of Liz Sanchez. Ron and Sylvia Guzman are her uncle and aunt. Tabby is 17 years old and a Junior at Carrol High School.
Liz said she wanted me to thank Dave and Lois Gilliam for the influence they have had on Tabby. She also wanted me to thank David Smitherman.
Liz told me that Tabby was very close to Mamie. Mamie would pick her up and they would play "Old Maid" together and watch Martha Stewart. Whenever Tabby has to write a school paper on who has had the most influence on her, she always writes it about Mamie. Liz also told me that Tabby could always cheer David up and Mamie would occasionally call to see if Tabby could come over. After Mamie died, David gave Tabby Mamie's sewing machine.
We rejoice for the Sanchez family.

Suppose you are a Judge and a high profile case comes into your court. The accused is popular and controversial. The stakes are high; it’s a capital offense. Public sentiment is against the accused and masses of people are assembled outside of your court.
The prosecutors come into your court and make their accusations. Witnesses for the prosecution give their testimony. On the other side, the accused has no attorney, legal council or witnesses and the accused will not even answer the charges or defend himself in any way.
What do you do? Do you accept his silence for guilt and give him the death penalty? What other choice do you have?
That’s exactly the predicament Pilate found himself in when Jesus was brought into trial. What do you do with Jesus? He won’t even defend himself.
Pilate declared Jesus to be innocent (Luke 23:4) even though there was no defense.
Pilate eventually caved in to the demands of the masses and sent Jesus to be crucified.
There is no doubt that Pilate was in a predicament, but it really didn’t matter who was Judge on that day because Jesus wanted to be killed. That’s why he gave no defense. If he had given a defense and somehow managed to walk away from it all, generations of human-kind would owe a blood debt to God.
There would be no heaven for mankind… only hell and eternal punishment.
I’ve got a feeling that Jesus would have allowed himself to be killed for just me or for just you but when the opportunity came up for him to die for all of mankind then the decision became easier. Not easy but easier.
That’s why Jesus gave no defense, his love for you and me. What are we going to do with Jesus?

Howdy!
In Matthew 27:23-25, Pilate, the Roman Governor of Judea, allowed the Jewish crowds to determine the fate of Jesus and when they insisted he be “crucified”, Pilate declared himself to be innocent. Whereupon, the Jewish crowds accepted responsibility when they declared, “His blood be on us and on our children”.
About 40 years later, God sent Titus and the Roman army; the city of Jerusalem was destroyed and over one million Jews (men, women and children) were killed. About 97,000 others were taken into slavery.
John 3:16 says that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life”.
The message from Matthew is that “God so loved his only begotten son that whosoever took a part in his death or didn’t believe in him would suffer a bloody death of their own at the hands of the Romans”.
This historical event gives us an idea on how God deals with man when he sins. Not only does God reserve punishment for the end of time but he sometimes punishes us for sin while we still live on earth. And sometimes the punishment for our sins affects other people.
Was God “fair” with the Jewish people? I think so. He didn’t punish them immediately; he gave then 40 years to repent. He sent Apostles, prophets and teachers to them. Great signs and miracles were worked for their benefit. I’m sure that some of those who repented on the day of Pentecost were some of the same ones who 50 days earlier were screaming for Jesus’ blood but they repented and were baptized and were forgiven.
The only ones left in Jerusalem at the time of its destruction were those who had totally rejected Jesus in spite of overwhelming testimony and signs. The Christians had been warned to get out of Jerusalem.
If we don’t want the wrath of God visited upon ourselves and our children then we need to make the right choice about Jesus. It could have current and future consequences.
Veda Bashears is moving back to Mississippi. I’ll sure miss her. From the first time I met her I knew she was someone you could be completely comfortable around.
She asked me one time if I knew a certain song. I told her I didn’t recognize the title. She showed it to me in the songbook and I still didn’t recognize it. I asked her to sing some of it for me. After she sang for a little bit I was quiet for a moment and asked her… did you hear a coyote? She punched me.
The preacher from Mississippi is driving down to get her in the next week or two.
Jennifer Nuckel’s baby shower. Oct 3 at 1:30 pm at Linda Torno’s house.
Dave and Lois are still at MD Anderson.

Howdy.
The account in Matthew 27 of Jesus before Pontius Pilate is interesting to me. Jesus was presented before Pilate, and the chief priests and elders made various accusations against him. Their goal was to kill Jesus… they wanted him dead. Of course Jesus did not reply at all to their accusations… he just sat there silently. Pilate questioned Jesus, “don’t you hear what they are accusing you of?” Again, Jesus did not say one word. The scriptures say that Pilate was “amazed”.
My guess is it would take a lot to amaze Pilate. I find very little in my profession that amazes me, by and large in 28 years as a Veterinarian, I am no longer “amazed” at what I see. So to see that Pilate was amazed is a little surprising. You don’t become a Roman Governor by being a “Pollie Anna”. Pilate knew how to deal with people and he was used to treating people with brutality.
My guess as to what amazed Pilate was Jesus’ calm demeanor in the face of certain torture and a slow excruciating (a word derived from the cruc or cross) death. Pilate was amazed that Jesus was not begging for his life or arguing with his accusers or sweating with fear.
But what Pilate did not know about Jesus was that he was in the presence of the one who had helped create the universe and helped to create Pilate himself. Jesus knew that but Pilate didn’t… he had no idea. If he had, the emotion of “amazement’ would have quickly changed to the emotion of “terror” at what he was contemplating. Jesus was as far above Pilate as a human is above an ant… certainly more so… humans can’t create ants.
Jesus was calm because of his superiority and the knowledge that whatever Pilate might do it would not last very long and Pilate might be able to temporarily abuse and kill Jesus’ human body but he could never kill the God part of Jesus and even Jesus dead body could be revived.
I think behind Jesus’ calm eyes were calm thoughts. Calm eyes watching the scene that had been played over so many times in his mind, finally become reality. Jesus’ emotion might have been… relief. Relief that it was all about to be over and that he could again be reunited with the Holy Spirit and the Father in heaven.
That’s a big lesson for us too; no matter what we may have to endure here… eternity in the presence of God will surely be worth it.

Thirty Pieces of Silver
Howdy.
I was reading Mt. 26-27 the other day and thinking about Judas’ betrayal of Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. I suspect that Judas may not have known that this betrayal would lead to Jesus’ death. Afterall, Judas had witnessed Jesus’ great power and miracle working. He may have suspected that Jesus would triumph over anything the chief priests could bring against him. I don’t know.
What I do know is that when Judas witnessed the events that would lead to Jesus’ death he became very remorseful. So remorseful that he tried to correct his sin by confessing it to the chief priests and elders. Precisely what he should have done under Old Testament Law. He even offered restitution by giving the money back. Instead of forgiving Judas the chief priests rejected his repentance. They had to. If they had accepted his repentance it would be an admission of their own guilt. They couldn’t do that. They couldn’t offer Judas forgiveness and let him walk away.
Judas was so remorseful that he went out and hanged himself. Imagine the level of remorse that would cause someone to place a noose around their neck and cause themselves to be strangled to death. Judas had remorse. Sometimes we wonder why he didn’t go to Jesus and ask for forgiveness? I think the answer has to be that Judas did not fully believe in Jesus. Oh, he believed in Jesus power and miracle working but he did not believe that Jesus could or would forgive him of this great sin.
It’s always about belief isn’t it? Jesus could have forgiven Judas but Judas had no faith in him. Faith can solve all our problems.

Howdy!
Proverbs 12:13, “An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips… but the righteous will escape from trouble.
When I read this verse I immediately thought of Phillip Garido, the evil man who kidnapped and raped 11 year old Jaycee Dugard and held her in captivity for 18 years. Truly Garido is evil. For 18 years he hid Jaycee and successfully outwitted the law. In the end he was “ensnared by the transgression of his own lips”. The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports, “Going and proselytizing it in a public place, needing to get a permit and he brings the two kids and blurts out his criminal record – it’s very possible on some level, unconsciously, he wanted to put an end to it and didn’t know how to do it”.
There is a payment due for evil living and the evil will set the trap for themselves.
We need a volunteer to help RD Cave replace AC filters at the building. Preferably someone under the age of 70.
Remember David Holder from Ft. Worth will be here on Saturday from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm to work with our teachers. Let’s have a great turnout.

Howdy!
Proverbs 11:16, "A gracious woman attains honor".
I asked my class this morning if they could name someone who they considered to be a gracious woman. The first response was… Mamie Smitherman. Yeah… I can agree with that. Mamie has been gone about 5 years now but I still remember the small crowd of women who would surround her after church every service to visit with her. Of course Mamie had a handicap and couldn’t get around very well. I guess it was her goodness that attracted so many to her. Although her witty humor was an attraction too.
You know it doesn’t take long to forget people who haven’t lived well but a gracious woman, like Mamie, is hard to forget. Our lives are richer because of her and people like her.
We announced Wednesday night that we didn’t have enough handicapped parking spaces and some of our elderly members who can only attend Sunday morning worship services were having to park at the back of the parking lot. We requested that until we can designate more handicapped parking that the rest of us not park so close to the building.
Thanks for leaving those spaces open this morning. Rock on!
Mike Dubose (from Cy-Fair in Houston) will preach this coming Sunday on the subject of Evolution. He will present four lessons: Sunday at 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
We had some new college students in today…
Some of the songleaders tonight at our meeting wondered about a website where they can hear Christian music. Try this one…
http://www.kleinwood.com/_kc/index.cfm/musicmedia-center/2008-annual-singing/
From Donna Morgan…
I’ve been at the hospital with Victoria since Saturday night. She delivered her baby boy today. So far both are doing well. He was 3 pounds 3 ounces, and just over 16" long. He will be in the Infant ICU at Spohn South until he is big enough to go home. Thanks to everyone for their prayers and well wishes.
From Jeff Carr…
Colossians class on Thursday evening, at 7pm, beginning on Sept 10 and ending Oct 1 (4 consecutive Thursdays). At Ray and Linda Torno's house.
Leah Waters’ daughter Alia was in a traffic accident but is doing OK.
Last week I mention we had three surfers in the congregation… Joe, Trey and Cody. Add two to that number… Jeff Carr and Brian Snively. I’m thinking about taking lessons so I can "hang 10" with those guys.
We continue to tweak the adult class schedule for September. There are a few minor changes.
